Changing Your PSN Name
You can start changing your PSN name either through the web browser or through the PS4. But you cannot do it through PS3 or PS Vita.
Go to settings>Account Management>Account Information>Profile>Online ID
Then enter your preferred online ID and follow the prompts to check the availability and proceed with the change.
Through a Web Browser:
- Sign in to your PSN account and select the PSN profile.
- Then click the edit button which is next to your online ID
- Here enter the new PSN name and follow the screen prompt to complete the process.
On changing your PSN name for the first time, it would be free but then it will cost you, you change your PSN names how much ever time you want. Each change cost you $4.99 for the PS Plus subscribers and for the non-member it would be $9.99.
You have an option to set your old name beside your new PSN name for 30 days, in order for your friends to recognize you and this option would be available to you only when you are in the process of making the actual change but after you did it this option would be locked.
Risks Involved In Changing the PSN Name
Sony said that the PSN name change will be fully compatible with all PS4 games which are published after April 1, 2018, and also for the most played PS4 games even before that. The
The PSN name change cannot be done for the child accounts. Only after you cross 18 years you would be able to proceed with PSN name change.
Sony itself warns that this change might not be supported by all games and applications of PS4, PS3 and PS Vita.
And they as well warn that you might face few challenges with the name change starting from minor to major issues.
Minor issues like the old ID still reflecting or the game account being unlinked and so on.
And the major issues like losing the in-game currency, trophy progress, user-generated content or even the game and much more like this. Maybe changing your id back to the old one might fix the above-said issues.
Changing Back to the Old Name
At any point of time, if you want to change your PSN name back to your old one in order to use your old version of games or if you are not satisfied with your new PSN name in future, you can go ahead and change it to older one for free of cost. And for that, you have to contact the play station support directly.
